I had recently heard of visitation dreams when my dog Amos was hit by a car and died. When I buried him I said a prayer and told him that if his spirit ever wanted to come visit, I would like that. In the weeks that followed I had a few dreams with him, but they were very sad. I still had a lot of grief. In those dreams I would see him as he was when he was hit: Bloody and mangled jaw and wide shocked and scared eyes. In those dreams, he would show up and I would ignore him because I knew he was dead and not supposed to be there. He seemed to slowly follow me around wondering why I was ignoring him. It makes my heart heavy to think about.

About 4 months after he died, seemingly out of the blue, I experienced what I KNOW to be a visitation dream. It was in the early hours of the morning, around 5 I think. I instantly went from being sound asleep to a state that was conscious and aware, but still dreamlike. I was fully aware of my body and sensations, but my eyes were still closed and what I was “seeing” was slightly skewed from reality. In that moment, Amos popped up into my awareness. He had jumped up on his hind legs and put his paws on a fireplace step/bench like he was looking for something (I’d like to think he was looking for me). I was facing the fireplace, so I could only see the back of his body. It happened so quickly. That was the moment I shifted from being sound asleep to aware. I instantly thought, oh that’s him, this is the visitation, and my heart exploded with love and joy. When I thought that, he instantly darted around and ran towards me. Then the experience shifted into a completely energetic space. There was no concept of couch, fireplace, or bodies. It was pure sensation. I repeated “I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU!” I was hollering like a little kid over and over and over. It felt like a total eruption of pure love and joy and warmth. I cannot explain how exhilarating it was. It felt as though he was doing the same thing, like he was energetically bellowing his love for me. It felt like he was physically jumping up my right leg and I could feel his tail wagging. It was the most joyous sensation I have ever had. In the “dream” I began to cry I was so happy. I opened my eyes and became awake in my room. I was unable to move, but I felt the right side of my body buzzing, almost shaking. I realized what had just happened and became so grateful. I said a little prayer and told him I loved him and thanked him for coming to visit me. I told him I will catch him on the flip side.
